The U.S. Department of State revealed that an American Journalist has died in a Ukrainian prison

Gonzalo Lira, a Chilean-American blogger and a critic of President Joe Biden and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, died after he was allegedly tortured and denied medical treatment.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State confirmed Lira’s death in a statement to TASS news agency.

“We can confirm the death of a US citizen in Ukraine. We offer our sincerest condolences to the family on their loss,” the spokesperson said. “We stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance. Out of respect to the family during this difficult time, we have no further comment.”

Gonzalo rose to prominence in 2022 for speaking out against what he believed was a growing authoritarianism in Ukraine. He viewed the conflict as a proxy war between the US and Russia and criticized the loss of life in a war he considered futile.

In December 2023, American commentator and writer Tucker Carlson had an interview with Gonzalo’s father. During the interview, Gonzalo’s father blamed President Biden and the State Department for his son’s imprisonment in Ukraine.

He believed that his son was detained for criticizing Zelensky’s government, the West’s response to the Russian invasion, as well as President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. As reported by Breitbart News, Gonzalo Lira is a dual citizen of Chile and the United States. He was living in the Ukrainian City of Kharkiv at the time of the invasion last year.

Gonzalo was arrested on May 1, 2023, in Kharkiv for violating Article 436-3 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (justifying Russian aggression against Ukraine). It was also reported that Gonzalo was arrested multiple times for attempting to cross the border of Ukraine and seek asylum in Hungary.

The late Chilean-American blogger was also accused of publishing videos with the faces of Ukrainian soldiers even though many of such videos were published by news outlets. Breitbart News also confirmed that Gonzalo once revealed that the Chilean embassy has done more to look out for his well-being than the American embassy.

The late blogger also revealed he suffered physical abuse inside a Ukrainian prison. Businessman and Tesla CEO Elon Musk once raised concerns about Gonzalo’s imprisonment in Ukraine.

Musk questioned how an American citizen could be imprisoned in Ukraine, especially after the American taxpayers provided the financial support it needed to defeat Russia.
