Former President Donald Trump suffered a devastating blow in New York after a Manhattan jury delivered an unfavorable verdict to the former president.

The former president’s assault accuser, Elle Magazine writer E. Jean Carroll, won a defamation case against him on Friday. Carroll had demanded $10 million in compensatory damages for injury to her reputation, humiliation and mental anguish in her public and private life. She also asked for an unspecified amount in punitive damages.

The jury, however, awarded Carroll $18.3 million in compensatory damages and $65 million in punitive damages after they found that the former president made defamatory statements about her in 2019.

Trump responded to the ruling on Friday, vowing to appeal the jury’s verdict.

“Absolutely ridiculous! I fully disagree with both verdicts and will be appealing this whole Biden Directed Witch Hunt focused on me and the Republican Party. Our Legal System is out of control, and being used as a Political Weapon. They have taken away all First Amendment Rights. THIS IS NOT AMERICA!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.

Several prominent Republicans reacted to the verdict, with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) calling New York judges political activists.

“We must protect American’s free speech and right to a fair trial! Pres Trump was denied a fair trial in NY where judges are now political activists instead of delivering justice!” Greene wrote on X.

GOP Arizona Senate candidate Kari Lake said the verdict is “outrageous” and proves the system is broken.

“This outrageous verdict against President Trump proves, yet again, that the system isn’t just broken — It’s corrupt as hell,” Lake said in a statement released Friday night. “There is no justice to be found unless you are a Biden supporter. Defamation accusations are being weaponized against the leaders of the America First movement, whether they be Trump, Rudy Guiliani, or me — if you say anything against the corrupt political machine you are targeted. For Rudy and me, it’s questioning wrongdoing in our elections. For President Donald J. Trump, it’s defending himself and fighting back against wild accusations from a lunatic he has never met.”
