A Connecticut Democratic state representative found himself in legal trouble after being arrested for driving under the influence this Sunday.

State Rep. Aundré Bumgardner (D-Groton), 30, encountered law enforcement after allegedly striking an object on the road while returning from what he described as a constituent event, according to police documents.

Officers observed several concerning signs during their interaction with Bumgardner, including a flat tire on his vehicle, bloodshot eyes, alcohol on his breath, and slightly impaired speech. Initially, when questioned about alcohol consumption, the representative denied having any drinks.

The situation escalated when Bumgardner struggled through multiple field sobriety tests administered by the officers. Police also discovered his wife sleeping in the rear of the vehicle.

Police body camera footage captured the representative’s unsteady movements during roadside testing, which ultimately led to his arrest. During processing at the station, Bumgardner expressed discomfort with the officer’s body camera, calling it “very invasive to him,” and showed reluctance when asked to acknowledge his rights through signature.

The lawmaker faces charges of DUI and reckless driving, with authorities temporarily suspending his driving privileges for 24 hours. Though released, he must appear in court at a later date.

His official profile on the Connecticut House Democrats website states:

“…plans to use his political experience to help small businesses, tackle climate change, and cut taxes for working families. He is serving on the Finance, Revenue & Bonding, Planning & Development, and Environment Committees. He also serves as Assistant Majority Leader and as the secretary of the legislature’s Black and Puerto Rican Caucus.”

In response to the incident, House Speaker Matt Ritter (D) has temporarily stripped Bumgardner of his leadership positions and committee assignments.
