Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) was involved in a car accident in Western Maryland on Sunday morning. The accident saw the Democrat lawmaker rear-end another driver.

The senator and his wife Gisele were evaluated at a local hospital for minor injuries, with Fetterman treated for a bruised shoulder.

According to a spokesperson for the Maryland State Police (MSP), the crash happened on the westbound route of Interstate 70 near Interstate 68.

“According to a preliminary investigation, a Chevrolet Traverse and a Chevrolet Impala were both traveling west on 1-70 when, for unknown reasons, the Traverse struck the rear of the Impala,” the MSP spokesperson said. “A passenger in the Traverse and the operator of the Impala were transported by ambulance to War Memorial Hospital in West Virginia for treatment of their injuries. No citations were issued. The crash investigation remains active and ongoing.”

The Democrat has had a history of health ailments in recent years. In May 2022, he suffered a stroke while serving as Pennsylvania’s lieutenant governor and running for senate. Following his recovery, doctors implanted a pacemaker and defibrillator in his chest.

In early 2023, he spent over a month at Weed Reed Hospital receiving treatment for clinical depression. In a recent interview with Bill Maher, Fetterman revealed that his fatal stroke in 2022 has empowered him to speak his truth without fear.

The senator referenced a quote from the first Batman movie where the Joker says, “I’ve been dead once already. It’s already liberating.”

A spokesperson for Fetterman released a statement revealing that the senator and his wife were discharged that same day and are doing well.

“On Sunday morning, John and Gisele were involved in a car accident with another driver,” the spokesperson said. “Out of an abundance of caution, they were evaluated at a local hospital. John was treated for a bruised shoulder, and they were discharged that afternoon. They are doing well and happy to be back in Braddock.”

No details were given on any injuries suffered by the senator’s wife.
