Protesters gathered at the Kennedy Center on Saturday for a “Rally & March for Drag,” with many participants donning elaborate wigs, dramatic makeup, and leather attire. The demonstration was organized in response to President Donald Trump’s recent prohibition of drag performances at the Kennedy Center, particularly those aimed at LGBTQ+ youth under 18.
“This president is demonizing a marginalized community in order to control the arts in America. It’s shameful, immoral, and weak,” drag artist Tara Hoot told The Advocate before the event. “At a time when our artists and LGBTQ+ communities are under attack more than ever, we need to show up and speak up against this fascist takeover of the arts.”

The Kennedy Center, which receives substantial federal support reaching up to $50 million annually, also benefits from private contributions. The institution underwent significant leadership changes when Trump recently removed Biden-appointed board members and installed U.S. envoy Richard Grenell as chairman.
“Just last year, the Kennedy Center featured Drag Shows specifically targeting our youth — THIS WILL STOP,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on February 7. “The Kennedy Center is an American Jewel, and must reflect the brightest STARS on its stage from all across our Nation. For the Kennedy Center, THE BEST IS YET TO COME!”
The controversial decision has prompted numerous high-profile departures from the Kennedy Center, including Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes, acclaimed actress Issa Rae, and the production team behind the musical Hamilton, who have either withdrawn from scheduled performances or stepped down from their board positions.
