Nearly 900 probationary employees at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) were dismissed on Thursday as part of the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative to reduce federal employment numbers.

According to CBS, approximately 880 employees were terminated, including weather forecasting personnel. The National Weather Service, responsible for daily forecasting operations and hazard warnings, saw roughly 375 probationary staff members let go.

When approached for comment, a NOAA representative declined to discuss the personnel changes with CBS. The spokesperson did state, “We continue to provide weather information, forecasts and warnings pursuant to our public safety mission.”

Before these terminations, NOAA maintained a global workforce of approximately 12,000 employees, with 6,773 of those positions filled by scientists and engineers, according to official agency statistics.

The dismissals are part of a broader initiative led by Elon Musk and DOGE to streamline what President Donald Trump has described as an inefficient and overstaffed federal workforce. The widespread terminations have impacted various professionals, including scientists, medical personnel, administrative staff, and grant administrators.

NOAA, similar to NASA, has historically been at the forefront of climate change advocacy. Evidence emerged in 2018 showing the agency had attempted to minimize the severity of the 2017/2018 winter freeze that affected the United States.
