During a campaign stop in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Republican Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio criticized Vice President Kamala Harris.

Speaking to reporters outside Air Force Two on Wednesday, Vance commented on Harris’s recent selection of Democratic Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota as her running mate. Harris and Walz had held a rally in the city earlier that day.

Vance, also in Eau Claire for a campaign event, approached the press on the tarmac and pointed out the vice president’s recent absence from interviews since becoming the presumptive nominee.

“I figured I’d come by and I wanted to take a good look at the plane, because hopefully it’s going to be my plane in a few months, but I also thought you guys might get lonely, because the Vice President doesn’t answer questions from reporters and hasn’t for 17 days,” Vance told the assembled reporters. “Have you an explanation for why she won’t take questions from reporters? Well, I hope that she changes her mind, because it would be good for the American people and I think it would be good for you all if she actually ran a real campaign instead of one from her basement with a teleprompter,” Vance responded.

Harris has not participated in any interviews or press conferences in the 17 days since joining the presidential race.

She has delivered a few speeches, consistently using the same script—first at campaign headquarters and then to party supporters in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she introduced her running mate, Tim Walz, on Tuesday.

Her only unscripted remarks came last week at Andrews Air Force Base when she joined President Joe Biden in welcoming Americans freed from Russia in a prisoner swap. As usual, Harris made a mockery of herself when she attempted to give an unscripted remark during the welcoming party.

“This is just an extraordinary testament to the importance of having a president who understands the power of diplomacy and understands the strength that rests in understanding the significance of diplomacy and strengthening alliances,” Harris said.
