The Georgia State Election Board voted 3-2 on Friday to require all counties to hand-count the number of ballots cast at polling places on Election Day.
The three board members who voted in favor had previously received praise from former President Donald Trump, according to The Associated Press. One Republican and one Democrat voted against the measure, which was celebrated by many Republicans.
“YES!!! Way to go GA State Election Board!! Thank you for taking every step to fight for election integrity!!” tweeted Republican Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Board Chairman John Fervier expressed his objections, stating, “We will be going against the advice of our legal counsel by voting in the affirmative.” He referenced a statement from Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr, which indicated that the rule was “not tethered to any statute” and could lead to legal issues, especially with the 2024 election approaching, CNN reported.

“Before we vote by voice, my discussion is that Mr. Chairman, I have to point out that every time you make a statement that this could be against the law, you are welcoming lawsuits,” Janelle King, a Republican board member, said. King argued that the board had the authority to create uniform election rules since counties previously varied in their practices regarding paper ballot counting.
“I will not correct your comments,” Fervier replied to King’s objections.
Sara Tindall, the sole Democrat on the board, expressed widespread opposition to the rule change, saying, “Everyone that I have heard from personally is against it.” Bryce Berry, a Democratic candidate for state House District 56, criticized the move, tweeting, “Put simply…this is some bullshit.”
Saira Draper, a Democratic state legislator and election lawyer, criticized the vote, questioning the board’s good faith. “Putting 11, maybe 12 new rules into play days before Election Day is a grift. We are setting up our counties to fail. Why do we know they are going to fail? Because they are telling you that,” she stated, according to The Washington Post.
