During an appearance on News Nation’s “On Balance,” Mace revealed, “They are threatening to kill me over this. Men that want to use women’s restrooms are threatening to kill me over this issue.”
Earlier that day, Mace had confirmed that McBride, who will make history as Congress’s first openly transgender member, was indeed the catalyst for this legislative initiative.
Speaking candidly about her concerns, Mace expressed particular worry about encounters in changing facilities, citing her use of the women’s gym during her time in DC. As a survivor of sexual assault with PTSD, she emphasized that such situations would be particularly triggering for her.
Despite the intense backlash, Mace remained steadfast in her position, drawing on her groundbreaking experience as The Citadel’s first female graduate. She declared her determination to intensify her efforts, stating the controversy marks only the beginning of her campaign.
The proposed legislation seeks to mandate that House members and staff use facilities corresponding to their biological sex within Capitol grounds and House office buildings.
This contentious proposal emerged shortly after McBride’s historic election to represent Delaware’s at-large congressional district.
McBride responded to the situation on X, writing: “Every day Americans go to work with people who have life journeys different than their own and engage with them respectfully, I hope members of Congress can muster that same kindness.”
She further stated: “This is a blatant attempt to distract from the fact that they have no real solutions to what Americans are facing. We should be focused on bringing down the cost of housing, health care, and child care, not manufacturing culture wars.”
McBride concluded her response by emphasizing her commitment to her constituents: “Delawareans sent me here to make the American dream more affordable and accessible and that’s what I’m focused on.”
