Lara Trump has announced her departure as Republican National Committee co-chair while exploring several potential opportunities as her father-in-law prepares to return to the presidency.
A key possibility under consideration is succeeding Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, who’s been nominated as Secretary of State. If confirmed, Gov. Ron DeSantis would appoint Rubio’s replacement to serve until 2026.

“It is something I would seriously consider,” she told The Associated Press in an interview. “If I’m being completely transparent, I don’t know exactly what that would look like. And I certainly want to get all of the information possible if that is something that’s real for me. But yeah, I would 100% consider it.”
Since becoming RNC co-chair last March, Lara Trump played an instrumental role in securing Republican victories across multiple fronts. Her next career move could significantly influence Republican politics, given her close connection to the incoming president.
The prospect of a Trump family member joining the Senate has garnered support from notable figures, including Maye Musk, Elon Musk’s mother.
“The Senate is an old man’s club. We desperately need a smart, young, outspoken woman who will reveal their secrets,” she posted on X.
At 42, Lara Trump has caught attention from influential supporters. Elon Musk, present during election night at Mar-a-Lago, endorsed her on social media: “Lara Trump is genuinely great.”
Under her co-leadership with chairman Michael Whatley, the RNC built a substantial network of volunteers and legal experts focused on election integrity. This followed Donald Trump’s 2020 loss to Joe Biden, which sparked debates about mail-in voting during the pandemic.
Reflecting on her RNC tenure, Lara Trump expressed satisfaction with achieving her objectives.
“With that big win, I kind of feel like my time is up,” she said. “What I intended to do has been done.”
She expressed enthusiasm for the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, which aims to streamline federal operations.
“I really don’t think we’ve seen movement like this in our federal government since our country’s founding in many ways,” she said. “And I think if they are successful in what they plan to do, I think it is going to be transformative to America in a great way.”
She anticipates changes in the upcoming administration, noting that unlike the previous term, no family members would hold White House positions.
“He really wants to get in there and do a good job for the four years, and that’s all he wants to serve,” she said. “Four years, and he’s out.”
She predicts unprecedented party unity following the merger of Trump’s campaign with the RNC, suggesting potential challenges for Republicans who oppose Trump’s agenda.
“The whole party has totally shifted and totally changed,” she said. “I think people are feeling a little more bold in coming out with their political views.”
