During his appearance on “The Count,” Halperin emphasized that the crucial factor isn’t Democratic opposition but rather securing support from Republican senators, some of whom have expressed reservations.
“It’s really not up to the left,” Halperin told Newsmax’s “The Count.” “It’s up to whether he can hold 50 Republican senators and I think there are some senators who have questions.”
The concerns stem from both past allegations of sexual misconduct, which Hegseth has denied, and questions about his qualifications for this crucial position. Halperin explained Trump’s preference for outsiders who can initiate change, particularly noting Hegseth’s stance on military policy.
“President Trump wants outsiders,” he added. “They want folks who will shake things up. And [Hegseth] is that. And he’s got a number of positions, particularly on removing woke from the military that are popular with those who voted for President Trump. I’d say today my general view is if he performs well at the hearing, if he gives the people a sense of what he’ll do in the job, I think he will be confirmed. But if he performs poorly, I think he does hang in the balance.”
Halperin addressed the complex nature of the Defense Secretary role, suggesting that Hegseth lacks experience in key areas. The confirmation’s success hinges on whether Republican senators view his unconventional background as an asset rather than a liability.
Additionally, Halperin discussed recent threats against Trump’s proposed cabinet members and transition team, calling for thorough investigation while cautioning against premature speculation about motives or perpetrators.
