Former President Donald Trump promised that if re-elected, he would “sign an executive order directing” each cabinet secretary and agency head to “use every tool” available to tackle inflation.
“On my first day back in the Oval Office, I will sign an executive order directing every cabinet secretary and agency head to use every tool and authority at their disposal to defeat inflation and to bring consumer prices rapidly down,” Trump told the crowd from Asheville, North Carolina.

Trump’s remarks follow the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ announcement on Wednesday that inflation saw an uptick in July. The consumer price index rose to 2.9 in July, compared to the same period last year. In June, the inflation index rate had increased by 3% year-over-year.
“We’ll do it very rapidly,” the former president and Republican nominee for 2024 added during his speech. “When you look at the cost of groceries, the cost of bacon went up four and five times. Bacon, I don’t order bacon anymore, it’s too expensive. It will be a whole of government effort to raise the standard of living and make American life affordable again.”
In a recent interview with Tesla CEO and X owner Elon Musk, Trump remarked that “a lot of people” can no longer afford to fill “a whole cart” of groceries.
“We’ve got to get the prices down,” Trump told Elon during a live interview on X. “You know, when I look at bacon costing four or five times more than it did a few years ago. When you look at some of the food products in grocery stores, people know — they can’t believe it. They used to be able to buy a whole cart, and today, a lot of people just don’t have the money. They go in and they can’t buy anything.”
Grocery prices have surged significantly under the Biden administration. According to TheStreet, food prices rose by 6.3% in 2021 and by 10.4% in 2022. In 2023, the increase in food prices reportedly “slowed” to 2.7%.
“The election’s coming, and the people want to hear about the economy and the fact that they can’t buy groceries because they don’t have enough money to buy groceries,” Trump told Musk. “The inflation has killed them, food prices are up 50, 60, even 100% in some cases.”
