President-elect Donald Trump is scheduled to face sentencing on Friday in Manhattan following his conviction for falsifying business records, with the hearing set to take place virtually before New York County Supreme Court Judge Juan Merchan.

The path to this sentencing remained uncertain until recently, as Trump’s legal team made last-minute attempts to delay the proceedings. After both a New York State appeals court and the state’s highest court rejected their delay requests, they approached the Supreme Court, which ultimately ruled that the sentencing could move forward.

The prosecution stood firm against these delay attempts, particularly noting the proximity to Trump’s anticipated second-term inauguration. They emphasized to the Supreme Court that jurisdiction remained with the state court, given that Trump had not exhausted all available state-level appeals.

Defense attorneys maintained their position that the case was politically motivated, expressing concerns about the timing’s potential impact on the presidential transition as their client prepares to return to the White House.

The sentencing, while proceeding as scheduled, is expected to be relatively mild. According to reports from AP, Judge Merchan has indicated his intention to issue an unconditional discharge, a no-penalty sentence that prosecutors have not opposed. This would mean Trump would face no jail time, probation requirements, or financial penalties, though the final decision won’t be confirmed until Friday’s proceedings.

The sentencing has been scheduled to commence at 9:30 a.m. Eastern time.
