In a shocking turn of events, the heir to a £292 million Welsh pie empire received a life sentence on Friday for the brutal murder of his childhood friend, appearing unmoved as he attended the sentencing from his hospital room.
From Ashworth Hospital in Liverpool, Dylan Thomas, who has been receiving treatment for schizophrenia and psychosis, briefly acknowledged the Cardiff Crown Court judge before learning his fate. The 24-year-old grandson of Peter’s Pie Services founder Sir Stanley Thomas was found guilty of murdering William Bush in a savage attack involving nearly 40 stab wounds.
The court mandated Thomas serve a minimum of 19 years, with credit for 337 days already spent in custody. During the proceedings, the victim’s sister Carin delivered an emotional statement, describing her brother’s death as occurring “in the most barbaric and cruel way.”

The events leading to the murder began when Thomas, staying at his grandmother’s house in Rhoose, Wales, convinced her to drive him home on Christmas Eve, claiming he needed to check on his dog. During the 12-mile journey to their shared home in Llandaff, Cardiff, Thomas maintained a Snapchat conversation with Bush while simultaneously researching human anatomy, specifically veins, arteries, and assisted suicide.
Just before arriving, Thomas exchanged final messages with Bush. “You home?” Thomas inquired. Bush responded, “Yeah I’m home,” to which Thomas replied, “Ok nearly home stay there x.”

Upon reaching the house, Thomas armed himself with two knives – a large kitchen knife and a flick knife – before launching a devastating attack on Bush in his bedroom. The assault resulted in 37 stab wounds to Bush’s head and chest. Bush, who had been planning to move in with his girlfriend and start a new job, was later found deceased on the patio.
In the aftermath, a blood-covered Thomas frantically knocked on his grandmother’s car window before making a chilling call to emergency services reporting his friend’s death. The incident occurred just weeks after Thomas had been arrested for trespassing at Buckingham Palace.
Sir Stanley Thomas, who established the Welsh bakery empire with his brother Peter, building upon their father’s pastry business, was present in Cardiff court for the sentencing of his grandson.
